DON'T BUY THIS BOOK! (Didn't expect to see that, huh?) This was a special edition of the best-selling Internet for Dummies which includes Internet Chameleon 4.1 software disks, everything you need to get your Windows machine connected to the Net. But now it's obsolete. Instead, see our Internet for Dummies, Starter Kit Edition which contains up-to-date software and costs less, too.

[The WebSurfer Page]

New Websurfer 4.6

  • Netmanage has made their latest WWW browser, Websurfer 4.6, available on the net for free. (Really free, no "evaluation" period, time limit, or shareware fees.) It's a very nice program, we think as nice as Netscape (sacrilege!) You should definitely get it. Netmanage has a page where you can download a 16 bit version (for Windows 3.1) or 32 bit version (for NT or Windows 95.)
  • WebSurfer works with any Windows TCP/IP package, not just Chameleon. You can also use it with AOL and Compuserve, since they now support the standard Winsock software connection scheme.

Improvements

  • The permanent activation fee is now $15, dropped from $50.

Corrections

  • On p. 281, WinZip is now available directly from its author. FTP to ftp.winzip.com and go to the /winzip directory, or visit their web page.
  • If you are looking for a GIF viewer, see p. 305. Or check out the Comsummate Winsock Applications page.
  • If you have questions or comments about the Internet Chameleon software, please contact NetManage directly at sampler@netmanage.com. (Yes, that's the right address even though this isn't their Sampler product, because the same people do the support.) Be sure to specify in your message that you are using Internet Chamleleon 4.1.
  • You can also call their support department directly at +1 408 973 8181.

Note to IBM Advantis Subscribers

  • It turns out that Advantis only issues evaluation keys for Internet Chameleon, not regular fully paid keys, no matter what you select when you sign up with Instant Internet. The bad news is that your Chameleon will stop working in 30 days when the evaluation key expires, but the good news is that they didn't charge you the $15 activation fee. To activate your software permanently, run Instant Internet again and activate directly with Netmanage. Your Advantis subscription should be unaffected. This situation is supposed to be temporary and IBM will eventually be able to issue permanent keys.
