AltaVista Provides extremely fast, accurate searching of over 40 million Web pages. AltaVista is among the most comprehensive of Web search programs (along with HotBot), and it’s one of our favorites.
Excite Offers two fine services: a search program named NetSearch and a Web guide, named NetDirectory, that lists evaluations of sites organized by topic.
HotBot Provides extremely fast, accurate searching of over 40 million Web pages. HotBot is among the most comprehensive of Web search programs (along with AltaVista), and it’s one of our favorites.
InfoSeek Produces highly accurate results within the confines of its database. InfoSeek's excellent at generating very current Web page matches, but at the price of sometimes ignoring older sites.
Lycos Furnishes sophisticated search options and a huge Web page database. Lycos also offers a Web guide organized by category and recommendations of top Web sites.
Magellan Internet Directory Gives you not only the names and locations of pertinent Web pages, but also reviews and ratings (from one to four stars) of many of the sites.
Savvy Search A high-level or "meta-search" program that, instead of scouring the Web directly, plugs your search word into several popular Web searchers, and then gives you all the initial matches together on the same page and organized by search program!. Use this tool to avoid the time and effort of entering text into each search program separately.
Yahoo The oldest major category-based search program, and a great place to start when researching broad topics. Yahoo isn't as comprehensive as some of the services in this list, but at the same time is likely to produce more targeted matches. Yahoo also offers great features such as Picks of the Week (www.yahoo.com/picks), a savvy list of the best of the Web (www.yahoo.com/Entertainment/Cool_Links), a weekly listing of new Web sites (www.yahoo.com/weblaunch.html), and a search program devoted to finding Web sites for kids (www.yahooligans.com).
