Internet Gurus Central Privacy Policy

[The Gurus] Our web site collects two kinds of information:
  • Automatically collected info provided by your web browser, such as Netscape or Internet Explorer.
  • Information you provide yourself: the information in the on-line book registration card, e-mail updates for the Zap part of the site, and orders you place at our on-line store.

What we do with browser-provided information

Each time your browser fetches a page, our server logs information including the time and date, which page it was, what numeric Internet address requested the page, and, if your browser sends it, what kind of browser you're using and the ``referrer'', the previous page that linked to the current one. (This is standard information collected by nearly all web servers.) Contrary to rumors, the information does not include your e-mail address or other identifying info other than the numeric Internet address.

We keep the raw log information for five weeks (so we can do monthly analysis) and create weekly summary files which we keep for about a year. We don't disclose the raw data to anyone other than the owners of Internet Gurus Central and I.E.C.C., where the site is hosted. We generally don't disclose the contents of the summary files either, other than occasionally reporting which pages were visited how often.

What we do with the registration card information

All information requested on the registration card is entirely voluntary, and you need not provide any of it to get full access to this web site.

We log the registration information you give, and, for books published by Wiley Publishing (formerly Hungry Minds and IDG Books Worldwide), send a copy by e-mail to the publisher. (We don't know what their privacy policy is. You can write them at info@idgbooks.com and ask them.) If you provide your e-mail address, we may occasionally send you e-mail announcing a new edition of your book, asking a question related to a comment you made, or something similar. If you ask a question, we might even e-mail an answer. We will not give or sell your e-mail address to anyone else, nor will we send third parties' messages to e-mail addresses we've collected.

What we do with Zap page update e-mail addresses

Many of the pages in the Zap area of Internet Gurus Central let you send in an e-mail address to get updates about the page. If you do so, we log the IP address from which your request was sent, along with the e-mail address and which page it was.

We will send you e-mail when we update the page. We may also occasionally send you e-mail announcing a book related to the topic of the page, or something similar. We will not give or sell your e-mail address to anyone else, nor will we send third parties' messages to e-mail addresses we've collected.

When you submit your address for any of the update pages, we will send you a confirmation e-mail to verify that the address you provided was really yours. If you don't respond to the confirmation, the address won't be added to our list. The confirmation message also includes instructions for getting off the list if you later change your mind.

What we do with book order information

If you order from our online store, we provide a secure web server you can use to send your order information, including your mailing address and billing information. That information is stored in a database here. Credit card information is sent to our bank by telephone. We do not provide your order information to any third party, except that we will provide it to our bank if they advise us that the cardholder has disputed the charge.

We ask for an e-mail address with the order information which we use in case there are questions or problems with the order. If you check the box on the order page to give us permission to send mail about other related books, we might do so. Your e-mail address will not be provided to any third parties.

The legal exception

Internet Gurus Central is physically located on a computer in Trumansburg, Tompkins County, New York. In the unlikely event that all or part of our records are demanded by a court order, we will provide the material to the court as required by law. We will attempt to provide the minimum amount of records that satisfy the court's request.
